For the first night

Salat al-Wahsha

Also called the prayer of the burial night or Salat al-Hadiyya (the gift prayer), it is a recommended two-rakʿah prayer offered for a believer on the first night after their burial, with its reward gifted to them.

When

On the first night after burial — any time from Maghrib until Fajr, though early in the night after ʿIsha is preferred. If burial is delayed or the body is taken to another city, wait until the night after the actual burial.

How (one common method)

First rakʿahRecite Surat al-Hamd (Al-Fatiha), then Ayat al-Kursi once.
Second rakʿahRecite Surat al-Hamd, then Surat al-Qadr ten times.
After the salam, say: اَللّٰهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ، وَٱبْعَثْ ثَوَابَهَا إِلَىٰ قَبْرِ (name) “O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, and send its reward to the grave of …” — saying the name of the deceased.

There is more than one narrated method. Please follow the guidance of your own marjaʿ. Islamic Souls provides this as a reminder and is not a religious authority.

Giving sadaqa on their behalf on this night is also recommended.
